Real Madrid has fired manager Rafael Benitez after a run of form which has left them third in La Liga. four points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid also find themselves two points behind fierce rivals Barcelona who also have a game in hand. Zinedine Zidane will take over for the rest of the season as the club looks for a long-term replacement.
Real Madrid has given Benitez the boot after he had been in charge of the club for just seven months. The announcement came a day after Madrid’s 2-2 draw at Valencia which appears to have been the last straw for club president Florentino Perez. The sacking of Benitez was sealed by this draw although it had been long-coming following the 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona in November at the Bernabeu.
In addition to the poor performance of the team there had been speculation of Benitez having a fallout with senior players at the club. The Copa del Rey debacle was a hugely embarrassing moment for the club too, being kicked out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player through carelessness on the part of the coaching staff.
Zidane who is set to take over as the interim Real Madrid boss was Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant in 2014 when they won the Champions League. He was currently coaching Madrid’s “B” team in the Spanish third division.
